About Darla

Darla Atwood

Being born strong is a major advantage in the sports realm, especially when you are a girl born in the nineteen fifties. Lots of great things happened for Darla Atwood because she was born strong, not the least is that she got to take the athlete’s journey through life.

Darla’s mother once told her, when pressed for childhood stories, that at nine months old she was so strong she shook her crib to pieces. This strength, in part, fueled her to a state record and championship her senior year in high school, and earned her an athletic scholarship at the University of Washington.

Today, you can find her name in the results for Master’s track and field in the sprint and hurdle events. She competes partly because she still can, but mostly because sport is her access to learning about herself, athletics, life, love and happiness. She understands that how she chooses to live her life is a reflection of what she learns pursuing her physical abilities on the athlete’s path.

Darla works with her partner and husband Duncan Atwood to create and publish sport instructional materials for youth athletes that lead to “Now I get it moments.”
